Tips for Surviving Without Health Insurance

The United States is the only industrialized nation that does not offer universal health care for its citizens. Not having health insurance is an extreme stress, it leaves you in constant worry, as medical problems can arise at any moment and unfortunately you usually do not get fair warning. Hopefully one day in the near future politicians will make universal health care a top priority, but until then we have a few tips on how to make living without insurance a bit easier.

There are medical discount cards available to those that are unable to get health coverage or choose not to opt for insurance. Different doctors, pharmacies and dentists participate in these programs, and you can obtain one of these discount cards for a small monthly fee.

Many health insurance companies offer short term coverage, which does not usually include preventative care however they do cover medical emergencies. Some doctors offer their charges on a scale offering more affordable care for those with lower incomes. If you do have an unusually low monthly income, try applying for government funded health care like Medicare or Medicaid.

You can also decide on an individual health care plan which carries a high deductible, and for you to make co-payments on doctor's visits, but the "pro" to the high deductible is that they offer low monthly payments. Or you could try to open a bank account devoted to saving for health emergencies or other medical bills.

Whatever you decide to do, know that emergencies can arise at any moment so make sure that you are 100% prepared for anything.
