Casey Anthony Not Guilty

The justice system allows people who are convicted of crimes a chance to show that they are innocent, or at the very least, not guilty of the crimes that they are accused of in a court of law. In many cases, it works, and other times, it does not. The duty of the court is to prove that the defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The jury is instructed to give a verdict of not guilty if there is any doubt that the defendant committed the crime. This is the way the system has been since its inception and the way it will remain for eternity, most likely, and many famous people and the biggest rap stars get out based on the excellence of their representation. In some cases, many believe that the guilty are allowed to walk free, while others think that the system truly serves justice. If the prosecution has a weak case, then a criminal may walk free, but sometimes, innocent people are sent to jail as well, which is one thing that the legal system tries to avoid at all costs as they can be sued down the line. One high profile case that ended in much discussion of the justice system was the trial against O.J. Simpson. He was found not guilty and walked while many believed he was the killer of his ex and her friend. (more…)

Financial Responsibility and Youth

Debt is an omnipresent state in many of our lives. As we begin to age, we start to understand the importance of keeping our debt in check and paying it off in a timely manner. It is best to pay more than the minimum payment for any type of debt and when we are younger, we often forget that are spend recklessly, making it difficult to do so. Eventually, the debts we have become overwhelming and we must accumulate even more debt to pay off our current debt, resulting in a cycle of missed payments and accumulation of money owed to creditors. At some point in our lives, we will need to take on some debt. Unless we have saved enough to buy a home outright, we will need to take out a mortgage to buy one. We will need good credit in order to get a good interest rate. In order to get a good credit score, we must use some forms of credit to allow other companies to trust us. Those without debt or who have bad credit are considered risks due to past delinquencies or no history of on-time payments. Those who have avoided credit most of their lives are punished for doing so, it is almost as if not having any credit history because we are responsible is worse that if we have a lot of debt, but keep up with our payments. The unknown scares financial companies and they believe those with little credit experience will get overwhelmed and miss payments resulting in the use of multiple payday loans to catch up.

Students in particular will need to start to establish their credit scores very early on to be able to afford the mortgage on a new home once that becomes a goal of theirs. The credit score is determined by your payment history and the length you have had your credit cards, so starting early is a safe bet on the road to establishing credit for large purchases such as homes and cars. It is difficult to save that much money, so many have car payments, but for them to be affordable, you must have good credit. This will afford you a low interest rate as you will not be a risk to the bank. Those with poor credit have had payment issues in the past and banks get sacred that it may happen to the money they are owed, so the interest rate is high to compensate from the money that may be lost. Having a credit card is also great for emergencies as it is very difficult for a starving student to save an emergency find. This way, they kill two birds with one stone. The credit card is perfect for emergencies and will help them build their credit, all the while learning valuable lessons about their finances and how choices made now can truly affect their future. These mistakes can be avoided by sitting down with your kids and discussing finances at an early age and explain to them the reason for establishing credit and what to not do with the credit card they use for emergencies. Although they may not listen, at least you have warned them of the dangers of overextending themselves.

Student Life and Debt

1195980_honor_graduateYour financial life really begins to blossom when you are out on your own, free from your parents and working a job or going to college to get an education to land a great job in an industry you are truly interested in pursuing. When you have steady income, you will start to think about getting a credit card and it is important to establish good credit and maintain it from the beginning of your financial journey. You want to be conservative at first and do what you can to prevent the heavy use of payday loans to pay down accrued debt, but you want to have enough open, available credit to buy things you may not otherwise be able to afford. You have to examine the offers on the table and make sure to take the best possible as you will eventually have to pay the debt off and the less interest you have to pay, the better.
Eventually you will want to buy a home. Whether it is sooner or later, it is important to build your credit and try your best to keep any negatives to a minimum. Paying your bills on time is one way to assure that your credit score will remain high. If you start at an early age and budget your finances, you will be able to keep up with payments and make them on time. You will eventually want a car as well and unless you can pay cash, you will need a loan. The best way to get a good interest rate is to have great credit and shop around to local banks in your area. You can get them to compete for your business if you have good credit and the likelihood of you paying on time exists. If you do have some negative marks on your credit report, verify them and try to get them removed. If you have collection accounts, ask what it may take for them to completely remove the item from your credit reports.

Be Gender Neutral for Greater Savings

4742651914_74c21a5b82If you’ve never checked out how the other half lives, you’d be surprised to find that many products made for men are cheaper than similar products made for women. Marketers and retailers will sometimes price things higher for the fairer sex, not so much because it costs more to manufacture (although it sometimes does), but because they hope to get a bigger profit. If you want to avoid this type of subtle sexist marketing, cross the aisle and buy the man’s product instead.

Shaving Cream

This is a perfect example of a product that essentially has one function: to help you safely and smoothly shave your legs or facial hair. For men, who use it on their face, they use it in front of a mirror. For women, they often shave their legs in the shower, so the can is manufactured to be waterproof, increasing the final cost of the product. When you compare how often you use it and how long the product lasts, is this difference in cost worth it to a woman? If not, try the man’s shaving cream. You can save up to 50% when you simply choose to go gender neutral.
